Full name of the ReN:
| English as a Medium of Education, Multilingualism and Virtual Exchange: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion |
Scope of the ReN
The AILA ReNĀ English as a Medium of Education, Multilingualism and Virtual Exchange: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EMEVEDI), was set up in 2021, with the name English as a Medium of Education, Multilingualism and the SDGs: Equity Diversity and Inclusion, by Professor Kyria Finardi – currently AILA President – in collaboration with Professor Azirah Hashim (former AILA President) and Professor Marina Orsini-Jones. The coordination of the ReN changed in 2025 – please see the convenors’ page on this website for details on this.
EMEVEDI aims to address equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) issues in research related to language education with a focus on EME, multilingualism and Virtual Exchange. Research in the REN redresses some of the inequalities in terms of participation in global conversations about language education to stimulate a debate on emerging ecologies of knowledge in applied linguistics (AL). Research in the REN aims to provide pluralistic perspectives on language learning and teaching and at decolonising the language education curriculum.
The ReN is open to a range of research methods, theories and AL approaches in different contexts as well as to transdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research and research into ‘otherwise’ ecologies of knowledge and liminal spaces.
The ReN includes established and early career researchers from many countries across the globe who are part of the AILA regional associations. The network provides a platform for information, research networking, support and scholarship for both scholars and students with an interest in the topics covered by the ReN for all education sectors.
